The Andrea Doria

The collision between the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm took place on July 25, 1956. The Andrea Doria was 122' longer then the Stockholm, and carried more then twice the number of passengers. The statistics are as follows

The precise location was 40 degrees 30 minutes North, 69 degrees, 53 minutes West. The time was set at 11:09 EDT. Forty six passengers lost their lives from the Andrea Doria, while the Stockholm lost only five people, all crewmen. Five rescue ships eventually came on scene, including the Ile de France, a passenger liner, the Cape Ann, a freighter, the Pvt. Wm. H. Thomas, a transport ship, the Robert E. Hopkins, a tanker, and the Edward H. Allen, a destroyer escort.

10:20PM Andrea Doria passes abeam Nantucket Light

10:40PM Andrea Doria first detects Stockholm on radar - range 17 miles out

10:48PM Stockholm scans Andrea Doria on radar - range 12 miles out

10:50PM Stockholm changes course to 091 degrees

11:05PM Andrea Doria changes course to 264 degrees

11:07PM Stockholm maneuvers 20 degrees to starboard

11:08PM Andrea Doria makes hard turn to port in attempt to avoid Stockholm

11:09PM Stockholm makes hard turn to starboard in attempt to avoid Andrea Doria

11:10PM Stockholm's bow hits the starboard side of the Andrea Doria

11:20PM Andrea Doria sends SOS...Need immediate assistance

11:54PM Capt. de Beaudean of the Ile de France responds and steers for the scene

12:30AM Stockholm picks up survivors

12:45AM The freighter Cape Ann, arrives first on station

01:23AM The transport William H. Thomas arrives with two additional life boats

02:00AM The Ile de France arrives and provides the desperately needed lifeboats

04:30AM The last passenger, Robert Hudson, is rescued by the tanker Robert E. Hopkins

05:30AM The Captain and senior officers of the Andrea Doria leave their ship

06:15AM The passengers rescued, the Ile salutes the Andrea Doria and returns to N.Y.

08:06AM The USCGC Evergreen arrives on scene and assumes command of the situation 10:09AM The Andria Doria, laying over on her starboard side, slips under the waves.
